Mississippi Fred McDowell Speaks The Truth, Even Beyond The Grave

Mississippi Fred McDowell is buried in Hammond Hill Cemetery in Tate County, Mississippi, between Senatobia and Como. His headstone was placed there by the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund.

In addition to Fred McDowell, Rev. Gary Davis, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rev. John Wilkins, Townes Van Zant, R.L. Burnside, Fabrizio Poggi and The Rolling Stones all recorded the famous lyrics etched into the reverse of Fred's headstone (above).

Whether sung slow and hauntingly, with a foot-stomping hill country groove, or as a hand-clapping gospel hymn, no truer words have been spoken.
